026 - Dead on Arrival: Run Hide Get Away!

We start the podcast Dead on Arrival -- no, I'm not sick again. It's the name of the group. The lead singer and guitarist of this Arkansas-based band was a San Francisco transplant -- and you can hear it in their music!

We also check in with the Kool Kuzzins, two brothers and their cousin, who did some recording for the Spot label in the mid-60's. And we offer up another dose of psychedelica, this time by the Sunn Cycle and the appropriately-named Acid Raga, Part 2.

The Soul Spotlight this time shines on some blue-eyed soul, figuratively and literally. Figuratively, because this mixed race group had some white kids emulating the Righteous Brothers. Literally, because that was the name of the band -- Blue-Eyed Soul!

025 - Planet of Union and Urban 44

We present a fine lineup of artists on this edition of our podcast. Denis and the Times open the show with their 1967 track "Flight Patterns." This Norfolk, Virginia band consisted of three brothers plus to friends.

LD Mitchell and the Amalgamated Taxi Cab Service offer up a slice of psychedelic goodness from the deep south with their song, "Planet of Union." This trippy tune belies its Arkansas origins.

The Soul Duo may not have quite hit the big time when they were active in the late 1960's, but they've achieved some stature among collectors and have shown up in several compilations of early soul. Their song "This is Your Day" takes center stage in the Soul Spotlight this show.

One of the most important bands in 1960's Virginia was the Morning Disaster. Their level of playing and the sophistication of their songwriting makes one wonder why they didn't break onto the national scene. Case in point: the excellent track we feature in this show by them, "Urban 44" could hold its own with anything coming out of San Francisco at the time -- yet the recording was never released. Another mystery from the halcyon days of rock in the Old Dominion.
